Hi Folks, I've been meaning to arrange a free software interest group gathering for a while now. It would be great to chat to some fellow free software fans. We're getting together at 8pm, Tues 30 March at Time Out Cafe in Federation Square. The cafe is near the Swanston St/Flinders St corner of Federation Square. Hi all, I am looking for people who are interested in helping share the awesome that is free software, by giving a talk or tute on Software Freedom Day (Saturday 19th September). Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to communicate to a beginners or intermediate audience, in approximately 25 minutes, some project or aspect of free software that gives you warm fuzzies and helps you sleep well at night knowing the world is a better place, or at least makes you go, "Huh. In case you hadn't come across them, I've been really enjoying the Software Freedom Law Center podcasts. I didn't initially take notice because I assumed they'd be aimed at legal folks and might be a bit dry. Turns out though, that they cover a wide range of free software issues, presented specifically for people without a legal background. Plenty of interesting free software guests too. I like the format of a recorded discussion too. I've always felt a bit distanced physically from much of the action in free software, so it's great to be able hear a bit of banter around the issues. Software patents in Australia, or, a foreigner asking directions

This week I'm documenting Australia, but I'm all the way over here in Europe, so I'm wondering if someone could point me to where I'd find a website or a group or a person who knows something about software patent problems in Australia. That, and I'm collecting all sorts of info - Australian companies/groups for, against, harmed, attacking, Australian court cases, news articles. Anything at all. Income tax returns under GNU/Linux

How did people go with submitting their income tax returns this year? I'd previously been able to use ATO's E-Tax program running with Wine on GNU/Linux. That didn't work for me this year though, so I decided to suck it up and submit it on paper instead. I've also made a start on a letter to the Tax Commissioner about requiring a proprietary operating system for submitting your tax return online. I'd certainly want to see E-Tax as free software eventually, but in the short-term, would settle for it being officially supported on GNU/Linux. If anyone is interested, I'm happy to send them a copy of the letter when it's done. Cheers, Ben

Bicycle Victoria using Ogg/Theora

Yay! I've managed to convince staff at Bicycle Victoria that it's worthwhile to publish their cycling how-to video clips in Ogg/Theora. While the content of the videos themselves isn't amazing, it's a step in the right direction to make the content available to all. http://www.bv.com.au/bikes-and-riding/40364/ The conversion process from DVD footage was relatively painless too, thanks to the ffmpeg2theora program. Some trial and error was required to get a good balance of quality/size from the audio & video. Ben

Stallman on Copyright

Hi All, In case you didn't see this mentioned on Slashdot the other day... Richard Stallman made a speech at the University of Warterloo on the past and future of copyright laws. Vorth a look if you have time. Not strictly about free software, but there's a strong link. Stallman mentions that, although hard to believe today, copyright laws were created for the benefit of the public. He mentions some changes to the laws that he believes would "restore the balance" in the age of computer networks.
