Bianca Gibson <bianca.rachel.gibson@gmail.com> writes: [Tim Berners-Lee in Melbourne on 2013-02-14] Good one, Bianca. Tim is a person strongly in alignment with software freedom. Not only did he release the World Wide Web itself as free software (by dedicating it to the public domain, as is healthy for scientific research), he continues to be a vocal advocate of abolishing software idea patents and preserving the freedom of people on the internet. It's not clear from <URL:http://tbldownunder.org/> what his public lecture will be about in particular. But this is certainly someone of special interest to members of Free Software Melbourne. -- \ “Oh, I realize it's a penny here and a penny there, but look at | `\ me: I've worked myself up from nothing to a state of extreme | _o__) poverty.” —Groucho Marx | Ben Finney

Yeah, thanks, Bianca, for passing that on. I also found out about it via the CAJ mailing list I'm on (Centre for Advanced Journalism), though they were slower off the mark. According to CAJ, the latest is that it'll be at Wilson Hall at Melbourne Uni, starting at 5.30pm on the 4th February. And, yeah, I fully endorse what Ben Finney said about TBL and W3C being free-software-friendly. -- Smiles, Les.
I can't go, I didn't read the email to confirm in time. That's a shame, but I will get to see him speak at LCA. Bianca On 11 Jan 2013 21:42, "Les Kitchen" <ljk@csse.unimelb.edu.au> wrote:

That was rather odd how that worked. I booked already, then I have to book again! Fortunately I didn't miss the extra email and I read it.... I get so many emails, some just don't ever get looked at. cheers A.
Hi All, I just got a mail message from CAJ that they're releasing another batch of Tim Berners-Lee tickets tomorrow morning (Thursday, 17th) at 8am, at the URL: http://www.eventbrite.com.au/event/5086489828 They say: "Due to demand, only a limited number will be released so be quick!" I hope you get this message in time to grab yourself a ticket, if you haven't already got one. -- Smiles, Les.
