Next FSIG meeting: Thursday 17 March
Hi all, Next Thursday is the 3rd Thursday of the month, and as usual, we will meet State Library at 6:30pm. If this will be your first meeting, try to arrive a few minutes early so you can find us in the foyer. Agenda: - Australia's upcoming copyright reform[1][2] - perhaps we should have some input into it? ... So that's a fairly short list. Feel free to add to it by replying :) Would anybody like to meet beforehand (5:30) for dinner? See you then, Alex [1] http://delimiter.com.au/2011/02/28/attorney-general-reveals-copyright-review... Hi Alex, Not a bad idea. However, I'd be lucky if I could get to Southern Cross station before 5:30PM.. so my ETA to the State Library would be closer to 6:00. Regards George

News just in from Kim Weatherall: @kim_weatherall US proposals for IP in the #TPP leaked. A quick review confirms it is AUSFTA plus; has patent provisions threatening access to medicines. @kim_weatherall US #TPP proposal leak - get the full text here: http://keionline.org/sites/default/files/tpp-10feb2011-us-text-ipr-chapter.p... -- Chris Samuel : http://www.csamuel.org/ : Melbourne, VIC
Hi all, Our meeting on Thursday was small, but productive. These are the minutes: - Anti-piracy report Cited by government, and obtained through the Freedom of Information Act by the Pirate Party. It claims that the increase in internet traffic is exactly correlated with job loss (which sectors?) - Copyright reform The issue for us is that this will likely be driven by ACTA and the TPP, and the above piracy report. This affects us because it may result in stronger DRM and anti-circumvention laws, and other restrictions on the use of hardware. - TPP Among other things, the TPP demands a copyright term of 95 years after the date of publication. Some confusion here: currently, does the copyright term start at the death of the author? - Patent abolition ambassadors We welcome Bill Appelbe, CEO of VPAC as a public voice against patents. We discussed who else we could approach. - Customer agreements We discussed what sorts of things should go in an agreement with a client to allow the developer to contribute code upstream in FOSS projects. Alex couldn't find any of these online. MFSIG could collaborate to create such an agreement, and pool our resources to have it looked at by a lawyer. Then we could post it on the Web for anyone to use. Action items: - Alex to write to Kim Weatherall to offer the help of MFSIG in campagning against certain aspects of the TPP: - Copyright term. - Anti-circumvention of copy protection / "rights management". - Patent "ever greening". - Chris to contact Con Zymaris about Open Source Victoria (are they still active?)

No Open Source Victoria has been for all purposes absorbed by OSIA. It really does not exist except for listing on a few obscure records maintained by MMV and perhaps some other organisation, that never updated their records. Cheers Daniel.

Right ... and I wonder how active OSIA are these days too ?? Alex and I attended a meeting at OSDC 2010 in Nov last year where it seemed to be under discussion whether OSIA even keep going or formally shut down. I emailed their official address afterwards to ask if any resolution was made on that and if they were accepting new members, and never got a response. Of course would be happy to be proved wrong that they _are_ still active! cheers, Pat.
Cheers Daniel.

"Content Industries" is the most specific it gets..
- TPP Among other things, the TPP demands a copyright term of 95 years after the date of publication. Some confusion here: currently, does the copyright term start at the death of the author?
Here's what the draft TPP IP section that was leaked says: 5. Each Party shall provide that, where the term of protection of a work (including a photographic work), performance, or phonogram is to be calculated: (a) on the basis of the life of a natural person, the term shall be not less than the life of the author and 70 years after the author’s death; and (b) on a basis other than the life of a natural person, the term shall be: (i) not less than 95 years from the end of the calendar year of the first authorized publication of the work, performance, or phonogram, or (ii) failing such authorized publication within 25 years from the creation of the work, performance, or phonogram, not less than 120 years from the end of the calendar year of the creation of the work, performance, or phonogram.
It would be good to approach OSIA to see if any work has been done on this previously.
- Chris to contact Con Zymaris about Open Source Victoria (are they still active?)
Ben's pointed out that OSV has been absorbed into OSIA, so I suspect this is now irrelevant. cheers! Chris -- Chris Samuel : http://www.csamuel.org/ : Melbourne, VIC This email may come with a PGP signature as a file. Do not panic. For more info see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenPGP

Not 'spruiking' anyone here, but through browsing OSIA listings a while back I came across an Australian law practice with a special interest in Open Source: http://www.opensourcelaw.biz/ It is run by Brendan Scott I think. cheers, Pat.
