Fwd: Interested in possible FSF events in Melbourne? - mystery event.
Here's the mystery event (I'm guessing). ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Brett Smith <brett@fsf.org> Date: 24 February 2012 15:00 Subject: Interested in possible FSF events in Melbourne? To: Bianca Gibson <---------@-----> Hi Bianca, My name's Brett Smith; I'm the license compliance engineer at the Free Software Foundation, which means that all kinds of license-related issues pass over my desk -- whether they're for education, advocacy, or bringing violators into compliance. I might be visiting Melbourne in early March to talk to government negotiators about the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement about its potential impact on free software developers. Right now plans are still tentative, but we're gauging how much interest there would be for events targeted at free software supporters and others who'd like to learn more about our work. We'd like to hear from you if you'd be interested in attending either or both of: - a speech, open to the public, introducing free software and discussing recent issues in free software licensing, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement - a small fundraising dinner for the FSF, focused on good conversation (come pick my brain!) We're currently looking at March 5 for both these events, but again, these plans are not finalized. If you would be interested in attending either of these events, even if the answer is "It depends," please write back to let me know and help us make an informed decision. If you do, I'll keep you updated on what we decide. I'm looking forward to hearing from you! Thanks, -- Brett Smith License Compliance Engineer, Free Software Foundation Do you use free software? Wha? Sorry =/. I thought it was something sent to the FSF mailing list, it had the same footer and I forgot that he'd have my email address. Ughk... *frustrated face at self*. On 26 February 2012 19:03, Ben Finney <ben+freesoftware@benfinney.id.au>wrote:

That was only one part of the invitation, and clearly that's not what I was referring to. There was also an invitation to a more private event, which in that message was an invitation intended only for the recipient and not for wider distribution. -- \ “I must say that I find television very educational. My apologies, it wasn't that clear to me - (this should teach me not to answer emails too late in the evening). Adrian

Yes, Brett Smith of FSF is our mystery event! :) The reason it was a mystery was, firstly, Brett and I spoke for the first time last Thursday - we didn't know what shape the event might take or even if he was definitely coming. Secondly, a "mystery" is more fun! Brett sent around an email to FSF members in Victoria (including Bianca) to gauge interest so he could decide whether to come or not. As Bianca mentioned, the first part of the event is a public talk. This will be on Monday 5 March, 6pm at University of Melbourne (precise venue to to be announced). I'm just about to publish the details and registration page. Following this, a small fund-raising dinner will be held nearby. We don't yet have details yet. It will be kept quite small to allow conversation, so I suspect FSF members will get first dibs on tickets. Exciting! If anyone is available to help out on Monday, please let me know. I'll definitely need your help to get the word out over the next few days. More details soon. Ben

I'd like to help out, but I may have my hands full. Hopefully he'll also
be giving a talk at Monash, which I'm playing a role in. Once details exist I'll let people know. Bianca
