Skip meeting and go see Stallman
Hi Folks, The next Melbourne Free Software Interest Group meeting is scheduled for next Thu 16 September. I suggest we skip the meeting and instead just attend Richard Stallman's speech the night before. Stallman: Free Software in Ethics and in Practise Wed 15 September, 5:30pm, Melbourne University Copeland Theatre RSVP required: http://nicta.com.au/nicta_events/events/event_repository/upcoming_events/big... If you can't make it, there's also a second Stallman speech: Stallman: Copyright vs. Community in the Age of Computer Networks Thu 16 September, 12:30pm, RMIT Storey Hall. Details: http://goanna.cs.rmit.edu.au/~gingrich/flyer-1.pdf And then of course, there's Software Freedom Day on Sat 18, 11am-4pm, State Library of Victoria. I'm excited to be presenting a speech on "Why is free software important?" in the session starting at 11am. Lots of fun to be had. :) Ben
On a related issue, and really for long term consideration, I briefly watched 4 Corners in Monday and was about Gene Patents and the issues about. I suggest that there are many parallels between Gene Patents and Software Patents in terms of public good, freedom of information and patenting laws etc. Might be a good idea in the future to consider linking up with the people involved in fighting gene patents, and that includes Public Health administrators (Drs etc) as well as Academics around Australia. As I said, for longer term consideration, to keep at back of our minds! Cheers Daniel.

I'm going to both events. I probably won't be able to get there before 5:30pm, but am happy to help out when I arrive if I'm needed. Should I to bring along any copies of the pages for people to sign or anything else, or is that all under control? We've got plenty of pens, lots of spare copies of the letter for all to view, etc? I'll make several copies of the petition. If anyone has a clipboard, please bring that and a pen or two. Ben

Hi all Could every one who will be attending Richard Stallman talk on *Thursday* and willing to assist with promoting SFD please tell me their names. One of the event organisers, Amit Goel, wants our names so we can coordinate with him. The suggestion is for us to distribute flyers and also to have a presence at the after talk networking drinks etc. I believe we have myself, Alex and Adam so far - and Ben? Ben do you want to connect with Amit, or do you already have contacts? Cheers Daniel.

I'll be there specifically to collect signatures on our patents petition, so feel free to let Amit know this. Ben

Is there anyone who is only interested in helping petition against software patents *or* promoting SFD (ie. one, but not the other)? If everyone is happy to support both (which wouldn't surprise me), perhaps we should try our best to coordinate our strategy. I'm not sure how busy it will get as people are going in, but maybe it will be easier to talk somebody you are already talking to about both topics at the same time? It would be a shame if people gave signatures but didn't get a chance to hear about SFD, or vise-versa. Regards, Adam
