Discussion group and committee election next Thursday 20 June
Hi Free Software Lovers, I'm looking forward to seeing you again next Thursday 20 June for our discussion group. This month we'll be looking at some hardware purpose-designed for compatibility with free software. Yay! We'll also be discussing the H-Node hardware database (details below). I'm delighted with the way our little group has grown and gathered momentum over the past 3 years. It's a real pleasure to turn up each month for interesting free software chatter and to get to know such a friendly and enthusiastic bunch of people. As I mentioned in April, I'd like to keep this momentum going by electing a committee to involve and recognise the work others do in keeping the group running. Next Thursday I'd like us to elect the following annual positions: - President - Vice-President - Secretary - Treasurer I'm certainly happy to stay on as defacto-President, though would welcome anyone else interested in taking on the role. Alex tell me he feels the same about his role as defacto-Vice President. If you're interested in nominating for any position but can't make it to the meeting, please let me know. Hopefully the committee can take advantage of the recent breakthroughs in free software video-conferencing to hook up once a month for a brief virtual meeting. See you Thursday! Please give my apologies for this meeting. I am, of course, an advocate of the cause but am very rarely available on a Thursday night. Sorry folks, I've got to bail on this, work is crazy at the moment and I've had too many late nights.. Something to talk about though, Oracle have demonstrate the danger of copyright assignments - they have silently relicensed the MySQL manual pages to a non-free license (from the GPL). https://lwn.net/Articles/555278/ Another reason for people and distros to move to MariaDB. cheers! I am proudly looking forward to meet you in July again after a long time. The mid-month Raspberry Jam meetings (RMIT building 80) I went for the past 3 month were held the same Thursday of the month but was moved to the last Thursday. I dont think there will be one next week, since it is the last Thursday, for anyone who is interested. Regards, Sven (VK3SIX)

That's great Sven! Look forward to seeing you next month. :)

I had anticipated having a ThinkPenguin delivery before tonight's meeting, but it is currently at Customs (not yet being held, just normal processing AFAICT) so won't have that to talk about. My existing notebook computer is specifically built by ThinkPenguin to work with free software, and we can discuss that more generally too; it's not the new shiny though. Another topic of interest is the Software Freedom Day plans. I'm always prepared to ramble about software freedom news as I've done on Byte Into It, of course :-) -- \ “Free thought is a necessary, but not a sufficient, condition | `\ for democracy.” —Carl Sagan | _o__) | Ben Finney

Still waiting on my Ouya device to arrive too. Perhaps Ben has had more luck? I know some people in Australia have had them arrive.

I had ordered a machine to work with free software a few months back, but apparently was still waiting on the parts after a series of delays (not ThinkPengiun though). When my current laptop started failing I had to cancel the order and just get something readily available. I'll bring in what I ended up with and talk about my experiences with it. -Adam
