http://f-droid.org/ The f-droid repository appears to only have 8 pages of applications, that would be 240 apps or less. Obviously we need to have a wider range of apps there. It seems that there are free apps which aren't in f-droid, the Serval and "c:geo opensource" people seem to be committed to free software but don't have their apps there. Also some app developers haven't published any interest in free software but have aims which match - the Marine Traffic app is one example where the developers should be FOSS friendly. So some f-droid and FOSS on Android advocacy would probably help. It seems to me that f-droid makes for a usable phone. It has applications of enough of the important categories to get by, I could potentially delete all my Google Play apps and install only f-droid stuff and have a useful system - one that would allow me to do my current web surfing and do all the things that my clients require me to do (IE the ConnectBot for ssh access). It would be really good if we had more games on f-droid. There are currently no games in the business simulation, action shooting (like 1942), cannon shooting (like Angry Birds), and tower defense genres. I now have a general plan to make my main Android phone have only f-droid apps at some future time for security reasons among other things. -- My Main Blog http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/

There is a lot of open source software not in F-Droid, have a look at the request queue: http://f-droid.org/forums/forum/submission-queue/ Unfortunately this is just a forum, there is no tracking of which ones have been included. A while ago I tried to get Tram Hunter included, however haven't seen or heard anything since: http://f-droid.org/forums/topic/tram-hunter/ I could generate a list of open source software that is useful in Android market but not in F-Droid, however not really sure this is useful based on my experiences with the above request. I don't think there is any software in F-Droid (correct me if I am wrong) that is designed for tablets. In fact some software from F-Droid looks awful on tablets (everything, including menus, scaled up to fill the screen). I submitted a related feature request: http://f-droid.org/forums/topic/feature-request-tablets/ -- Brian May <brian@microcomaustralia.com.au>

What is causing the delay? Do they need more people to volunteer to process requests? Do they need people with sysadmin skills to setup bug trackers etc? Do we need to fork the f-droid project?

This seems to mostly be the issue of a lack of software in f-droid. -- My Main Blog http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/

Sure, but no-one replied to that part of my message. -- My Main Blog http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/

On the contrary, all the code and data I think is available in git: http://gitorious.org/f-droid/ The best way of helping out probably would be to fork the relevant projects, and send back merge requests. A shame they don't seem to process merge requests faster however: http://gitorious.org/f-droid/fdroiddata/merge_requests/2 - is a month old with no updates. -- Brian May <brian@microcomaustralia.com.au>
