Open letter on abolishing software patents in Australia
Hi Folks, I've finally written up a letter to Senator Kim Carr on abolishing software patents. I'd really appreciate any feedback. Alex, Chris and George gave some very useful thoughts at our recent get-together. The letter is published on the End Software Patents wiki so please hop in and edit it: http://en.swpat.org/wiki/Open_letter_on_Australian_software_patents I'm hoping to finalise it and start collecting signatures in a week or so. I'll probably set up a web form for collecting signatures and also aim to collect a small number of higher profile signatures on paper. Cheers, Ben
Here's some ammunition for our letter: it looks like New Zealand will abolish software patents: http://www.nzcs.org.nz/news/blog.php?/archives/97-.html# | Hon Simon Power announced today that he wouldn't be modifying the | proposed Patents Bill hence software will be unpatentable once the Bill | passes into law. There are some good quotes in there, too. Perhaps we should change the tone of our letter to specifically recommend that Australia follow New Zealand's lead in this (rather than just using it as an example). But I suppose that could be dangerous, in the event that this bill doesn't get passed. Cheers, Alex

Hi Alex, Thanks, that's a good idea. I'm running a bit short on time and though, so while I'd like to tune the letter further, I think we'd better just get the letter out and start collecting some signatures. Cheers, Ben
