New Zealand drops pure software patents
Hi all, It seems that our New Zealand friends have had some success in they battle against software patents: http://www.zdnet.com/new-zealand-drops-ability-to-patent-software-7000015109... Actually I thought they were already at this point, but I guess there was still some uncertaintly around it. The fact that software alone is now unpatentable in nz is great, but I still wonder about the details. Surely all software just makes the hardware it runs on perform its function better? It will be interesting to watch the first court cases. So New Zealand have beaten us once again! Alex
Wow, good show. Gay marriage and software patents in one month. On Thu, May 9, 2013 at 6:42 PM, Alex Fraser <alex@phatcore.com> wrote:

Oh, someone pointed out that the name of the minister interviewed in that article is Chris Foss. Awesome! On Fri, May 10, 2013 at 12:36 AM, Matt Giuca <matt.giuca@gmail.com> wrote:

Unfortunately it isn't just software patents that are insane. http://yro.slashdot.org/story/13/05/13/1552220/supreme-court-rules-for-monsa... -- Brian May <brian@microcomaustralia.com.au>

The discussion over extending the "free" movement beyond software is certainly one which comes up every so often, and usually from my experience, by those who are not involved in the FSM. One which often raised is various pharmaceuticals. Apparently some people do not like the idea that life-saving technologies are subject to monopolistic profiteering.
