Free software meeting wrap up
Hi Folks, I just wanted to say a great big THANKS! to everyone who came along to the Free Software Melbourne discussion group last Thursday on encouraging women in free software. We had 16 people, our highest yet and over a third women. We heard some really interesting stories and ideas, which continued on over tasty Korean food for dinner. Alex and I were a little nervous about whether we could hold a discussion where people would be comfortable to speak freely. We needn't have worried though, everyone was overwhelmingly thoughtful and considerate. One recommendation discussed was to speak up if you notice bad behavior. This is especially important for the blokes who can have significant influence in these situations. Notes from the discussion: http://wiki.freesoftware.asn.au/encouragingWomen Thanks again to Alex for organising the venue and for taking notes. Thanks also to Ben F. for bringing snacks. Finally, pencil in "Mystery Free Software Event" on the evening of Monday 6th March. We have a special international guest in town. Details soon! Ben

Additionally, Amanda suggests that anyone looking for more information should check out the Geek Feminism website and wiki. There's lots of background info and examples that were difficult to explain on the night. Ben

Mm, maybe those notes should go on the geek feminism wiki as well? Where they are now people who would be interested are probably not going to find them. Bianca

Hi Bianca, Would you mind summarising these notes and adding the revelant points to the Geek Feminism Wiki? That would be awesome. :) Ben

A good friend Ange wasn't able to make it to the meeting, but offered the following suggestions for helping women have a great experience: http://wiki.freesoftware.asn.au/encouragingWomen#Follow_up_suggesions_by_Ang...
That book "Getting to yes" that somebody suggested I read appears to be this one: http://books.google.com.au/books?id=sjH3emOkC1MC http://www.amazon.com/Getting-Yes-Negotiating-Agreement-Without/dp/014311875... Unfortunately no ebook, don't get confused with this ebook which is just an expensive 4 page summary: http://www.amazon.com/Getting-Yes-Book-Summary-ebook/dp/B005RL9JU4/ref=sr_1_... -- Brian May <brian@microcomaustralia.com.au>
