[Fwd: [SFD-announce] SFD 2013 registration is now ON!]
Hi Freedom-lovers, Is the Melbourne Free Software Group interesting in taking up the role of organising Software Freedom Day this year? LUV has done it a few years in succession now, but it's really something that should be in the domain of Melbourne FS. All the best, Lev ---------------------------- Original Message ---------------------------- Subject: [SFD-announce] SFD 2013 registration is now ON! From: "Frederic Muller - DFF" <fred@digitalfreedomfoundation.org> Date: Sun, June 16, 2013 4:21 pm To: "SFD announcements" <sfd-announce@sf-day.org> -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear all, It is with a great pleasure that we are opening registration for SFD 2013. The wiki has been prepared with the current localized languages available and some of the translations for the Frontpage still need to be updated. We are still finishing some of the design including the countdown which will start working 99 days before the event. As usual we are available for support through email on sfd-discuss or on IRC (#SFD on freenode). The deadline for registered teams to get the free goodies is July 21st which should give us enough time to ship everything everywhere. Simply create your team page under http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/2013 (/country/city/team for most) and complete the form on http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/cgi-bin/register.py. All information and links are of course available from the SFD website. As usual artworks are available under http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/Artwork and CC-BY licensed. Feel free to use, enhanced and eventually localize them. I want to particularly thank our sponsors who are making this possible, namely Canonical, Google, and Linode for the time being. Should your organization be interested to sponsor DFF to be able to send more goodies please get in touch with us. Note that there is a deadline to be listed on the magazine ads we run with our media sponsors, Linux Magazine, Ubuntu user, Admin, Smart developer and Linux Journal, which is around mid July or early August. We will be going through various changes in terms of blog location and ways to hear about us, the main reason being that we have moved our non-profit to Hong Kong and the requirements are a bit different than in the US. Besides we are a lot of projects going on and those require some changes. So let's get started and happy SFD preparations! The Digital Freedom Foundation Board ps: do check the SFD 2011 winners for inspiration and thanks again to Lemote and FSF for the prizes. http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/en/competition/winners-2011 [1]: http://mail.sf-day.org/lists/listinfo/sfd-discuss [2]: http://planet.softwarefreedomday.org (language specific planets available through the language switcher) _______________________________________________ SFD-announce mailing list SFD-announce@sf-day.org http://mail.sf-day.org/lists/listinfo/sfd-announce -- Lev Lafayette, BA (Hons), MBA, GCertPM mobile: 0432 255 208 RFC 1855 Netiquette Guidelines http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1855.txt

I have to agree. We should definitely discuss this at the meet-up this Thursday. As we're planning on putting together a committee, should we agree to head SFD for Melbourne, those elected should immediately have their work cut out for them. :) Cheers, Adam -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.12 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://www.enigmail.net/ iQEcBAEBAgAGBQJRvvwEAAoJEE2M/Tk0piBIyGoIALKijvJwxEO3fXLV/OnefDNV WPcOGeaKfeGsa9S130P+rCAQ2c9CTgUlHemt8j90yT8YpRRtv067DwJjgnu4qQ2h WWSPs50jCsMk8yO+wrlNrdKUEVXiM/5B5oZZFaM+AWV1Fidu/lRWCByCpxjY89L0 hdX+Y/n3pSiqqtO+V7dcsGJUrFFmu85U8XELnS9cU1N+0jGq1V029HNS4mSuv831 NlAxBrSXEPLRJOuNFWt5/j82abazHcJUHPhP1Mxsfgb36MEKymeKvWukdOtjJID4 SAjNlAkhoaZqeVFWaU+XyeIklpIgB/po3F3RxofAm4M9GdWKKXLoQ2KZIIevyPk= =Wdio -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Thanks for mentioning this Lev! As someone who's enjoyed event over the past few years, I'd really like to thank Lev, the current committee and the previous committees of LUV for their leadership and hard work organising recent Software Freedom Days. Many of us have played a role in organising, but without people like Lev stepping up to organise a venue, talks, food and publicity, Software Freedom Day simply wouldn't happen. Big thankyou! I'd love for Free Software Melbourne to take on a larger role in organising the event this year. We'll certainly discuss this amongst the group and be working closely with LUV committee. Regards, Ben

If you're interested in distributing DVDs/CDs, I've updated my notes at the Creative Contigencies Wiki http://wiki.cc.com.au/SFD/Contents There may be other relevant notes (ie media contacts) there. Similarly there may be some relevant notes at the LUV wiki. Regards, Rodney Brown

On this, I have created a team/wiki page for Victoria/Melbourne for SFD. http://wiki.softwarefreedomday.org/2013/Australia/Victoria All the best, -- Lev Lafayette, BA (Hons), GCertPM, MBA mobile: 0432 255 208 RFC 1855 Netiquette Guidelines http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1855.txt
Any news on SFD guys ?? It's only 2 and a half weeks away now - and it appears the http://www.sfd.org.au/melbourne/ website still refers to the 2012 event .... and there's nothing on the Wiki page in Lev's previous post ... ... don't mean to criticize others when I haven't stepped forward to do anything myself but would be good to know what's going on. I might be able to volunteer some time to help get things done on the day, or even give a talk on the potential benefits of using FOSS in public decision-making for example. cheers, Pat S. I'd be happy to help out again, maybe give a talk if needed. Andrew -- Andrew Pam <andrew@sericyb.com.au> Manager, Serious Cybernetics http://sericyb.com.au/

Thanks for the offers for talks. I'll check with Lev to see how we're going in that department. One concern that we currently have is that the venue that we have used previously (the Unitarian Church hall) has no public Internet access anymore. We can of course still tether to our phones... but it's less than ideal. If anyone can suggest an alternative venue that's at least as easy to get to, has us covered for Internet access, parking, etc. please speak up.

A Linux games talk would be very welcome, Andrew. -- Lev Lafayette, BA (Hons), GCertPM, MBA mobile: 0432 255 208 RFC 1855 Netiquette Guidelines http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1855.txt

Happy to do either that and/or my talk on free and open content creation tools. We can also possibly do giveaway DVDs again. Andrew -- Andrew Pam <andrew@sericyb.com.au> Manager, Serious Cybernetics http://sericyb.com.au/

Not yet; will have a full agenda by the end of the week.

*bingo* OK Pat, you're now down for giving a talk on the topic specified! All the best, -- Lev Lafayette, BA (Hons), GCertPM, MBA mobile: 0432 255 208 RFC 1855 Netiquette Guidelines http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1855.txt
Cool, ok I'll make a note of the talk and get some ideas together, hopefully can do a live demo of some of the things I've been working on with Beyond Zero Emissions. Also:- I went to the official launch of the Victorian chapter of the Open Knowledge Foundation on Monday (http://au.okfn.org/) and they seem like a nice bunch who may well support SFD in some way. Email is okfn.melboune@gmail.com . Perhaps worth at least inviting them with a view to future SFDs. In fact Steve Bennett, one of the members of the OKF Melb working group, is a real whizz on OpenStreetMap (eg he has been improving Melbourne's cycling networks in OSM) and I imagine could give a good talk on this. I could invite him on the SFD working group's behalf? (I know OSM is not exactly Free Software but does seem to extend FOSS principles to map data and interacts well with a lot of FOSS geo software). cheers, Pat S.
