Visiting Melbourne in January
Hi all, My name's Deb Nicholson. I work on a bunch of free software stuff, like the Open Invention Network, GNU MediaGoblin and OpenHatch. I also used to be the Membership Coordinator at the FSF. Anyway, I'm going to be at LCA in January and would love to visit Melbourne after the conference, approximately January 18th or 19th through the 23rd or 24th. Ben tells me that I'll be missing your regular meet-up. So I was wondering if any of you would be up for an ad hoc meeting or dinner while I'm in Melbourne? I'd also be interested in visiting other meet-ups with flossy folks, visiting your workplace if they want to chat about ameliorating their risk of software patent lawsuits and seeing whatever stuff a nerdy tourist *really* ought to see in Melbourne. Apologies in advance for laggy responses since I'll probably be getting your emails while I sleep. Cheers, Deb
Awesome! I'll firm up the travel dates and would love it if someone local picked a spot when we're a little closer. I actually don't know what neighborhood I'm staying in yet, but will be shooting for something sort of centrally located and on public transportation. One arcanum is that Melbourne has the oldest and only surviving first generation electronic computer (this excludes the electromechanical Zuse Z4 in Munich, and reconstructions such as the Colossus at Bletchley Park). CSIRAC is housed at the Melbourne Museum, but can be a little tricky to find now; it is tucked away on the lower foyer level. http://museumvictoria.com.au/csirac/ Glenn -- sks-keyservers.net 0x6d656d65

You might like to visit the Electron Workshop [1]. Their interests are not specifically in free software, but they're definitely nerdy and some are EFF members. Also Melbourne Blender Society is meeting on the 23rd [2]. Maybe you'd like to come and speak to us about free software and art/media, e.g. MediaGoblin? Or you can just come along to say hi. Sorry, I should clarify that I know very little about what their interests are - but that's where we had Software Freedom Day this year, and it looked like a cool place. Alex
Alex, I've booked my travel in Melbourne and will be in town the evening of the 23rd. Who's the best person to talk with about visiting the Blender meet-up? Thanks so much for all your help! Cheers, Deb On Sat, Nov 1, 2014 at 10:57 PM, Alex Fraser <alex@phatcore.com> wrote:

Hi Deb, I'm very sorry, but our January meeting has been moved to early February to coincide with a conference (Pause Fest). But if you still want to talk about Media Goblin, I could try to organise a casual meeting with another group who do visual effects. Again, I'm sorry about the change of plans. I'm definitely up for an ad-hoc meeting and/or dinner. Feel free to give me a call when you're around in Melbourne. I am currently trying to convince my friend to use Free/Libre software for his new music recording project, albeit with great difficulty. Regards, Damien 0415 387 933 ZamAudio.com
