Volunteers for Software Freedom Day table
Hi Folks, Dave and I have been chatting about organising a table to represent Melbourne Free Software Interest Group on Software Freedom Day Melbourne on 18 Sept. Would anyone be able to volunteer on the table for an hour or two? The plans are to: - tell people about free software - introduce our interest group and get to know new people - distribute Trisquel CDs and talk about Trisquel (a fully free GNU/Linux distribution) - collect signature against software patents Your help would be greatly appreciated! Cheers, Ben

Correct, the full event details are available at: http://www.sfd.org.au/melbourne/ I'll be speaking about free software and Alex will hopefully be speaking about software patents and the letter we've been working on to the government. Would you be interested in helping with our table Michael? Ben

Yep, sounds good but I doubt I could do more than a couple of hours. -- Michael Smith +61 416 062 898 http://glitch.tl

Thanks Daniel, that covers the day: 10:30 - 12:30: Michael Smith and Dave P 12:30 - 2:30: Geoff Shaw and Ben Sturmfels 2:30 - 4:00: Alex Fraser and Daniel J Everyone else, please come along on Software Freedom Day and say hi! We look forward to meeting you. :) Ben
Hi Folks, It turns out I'll be MCing the longer speeches all day tomorrow so won't be able to be on the table between 12:30pm and 2:30pm. Could we have a volunteer for this slot with Geoff? 10:30 - 12:30: Michael Smith and Dave P 12:30 - 2:30: Geoff Shaw and ?? 2:30 - 4:00: Alex Fraser and Daniel J What we'll be doing tomorrow ----------------------------- We have a table in the Experimedia Room where we can: - tell people about free software and why freedom is important - collect signatures on the petition against software patents - sign people up to Melbourne Free Software Interest Group list - distribute some fully free software CDs (Dave P is preparing) I'm sure many of you enjoyed the Stallman speech the other night. He re-inforced some policies I think we should stick to. Please talk about "GNU/Linux" or "GNU+Linux (pronounce the slash or plus) not "Linux" and talk about "free software" not "open source". Cheers, Ben

It's such a mouthful, though. Can't we just call it "GNU"? I know RMS said he didn't want to, because he didn't want to inflict the same pain on Linus. But we're not RMS :) Alex
Why is pronouncing the "slash" or "plus" important? I've been saying it wrong all these years! -Adam On Fri, Sep 17, 2010 at 05:47:17PM +1000, Alex Fraser wrote:

The idea is so that it doesn't sound like "Linux" distribution called GNU. I think that's a secondary concern though. More important that GNU just gets a mention.

The name Linux has a lot of mindshare in the general population. My preference it to refer to Linux while giving credit to the GNU project in conversation. -- Michael Smith +61 416 062 898 http://glitch.tl

Sure I don't see any problem in just calling it GNU either.

Four hours at a go might be a bit too much for me. My son has music lessons in the afternoon, for a start. That said I will try to hang around for a while after 12:30 and I will help out if I can. -- Michael Smith +61 416 062 898 http://glitch.tl

Thanks for the offer Michael. Let's try to find someone during the day so you don't have to stay too long. I'm sure there will be lots of familiar faces around.

Hi Ben I could probably spend a couple of hours on such a table if needed. I am probably free on that day (first weekend of semester break, so I won't be so desperately needing to write lectures etc...). IF you get lots of other volunteers I am happy not to (I could always sleep in etc), but if needed you can count me in - free software is certainly a thing I am more than happy to support.
