I'm pretty firmly in the emacs camp, although I appreciate the vi key bindings. I think the learning curve for emacs makes it a significant commitment, but it's an 'art worth your learning'. So do use emacs. However, if I were in the market for a 'simple' and free[^2] text editor, I think I'd check out atom[^1]. Looks like plugins are written in node.js.
